Read on for some great tips to increase speed and pronunciation from instructor  Giulia M I have been teaching Spanish, Italian, and English for a number of years.  I am Italian, which means that two of the three of the languages I teach are not my native one. I understand the challenges students encounter while learning a new language since Ive been through them myself. In order to master a language and express our thoughts and emotions in an effective way, we need to start thinking in that language. This can be difficult to achieve, but with  time, practice, and dedication, your thoughts will begin to  originate in your new language. I think the most powerful tools we have when learning a new language is our memory and our capacity to imitate. In fact,  a big part of  my learning process through the years has been when I watch movies in Spanish and memorize the dialogue. Much like with music, memorizing movie dialogue can help you learn pronunciation without having to think about the translation. The practice is useful when training yourself to think in a new language. My Top 3 Spanish Movie Recommendations There are so many great opportunities out there to watch movies in Spanish! I am a big fan of the Spanish director  Pedro  Almodóvar. His movies are very interesting and the actors speak Spanish beautifully. These are a few of his greatest titles. Volver A  comedic drama, the film features ghosts, murder, and love as it  details the relationships between three generations of women in Madrid. All About My Mother This emotional film follows a woman coping with her own personal tragedy as she makes new friends and reacquaints herself with an important character from her past. Chilean and Argentinean movies might be a little more challenging because the actors tend to speak quickly. I am a big fan of Ricardo Darín, an Argentinian actor. Quick Tips for My Students Watch movies with English subtitles if you are a beginner, and in the language you are learning if you are intermediate or advanced. This way you will be able to connect the words youre hearing with the words youre seeing on the screen.  This will help you memorize new words and work on pronunciation. Using two of your senses at once tremendously increases  your learning ability. Whenever you dont understand a word, concept, or grammatical structure, pause the movie and look it up in your textbook or a Spanish dictionary.  This will be more accurate than using an online translator and the act of looking for something helps you learn. Tips to Prepare High School Students for College-Level Reading As students mature, they learn how to study effectively and build those ever-important test-taking strategies for high school. By the time strong students begin thinking about how to study for the SAT or ACT, theyve acquired many of the subject skills they need to perform well, but a good SAT or ACT score is not a guarantee of college success. As Eileen Huntington, CEO Co-Founder of Huntington Learning Center explains, high-achieving high school students often struggle to adapt to the rigors of college right awayespecially when it comes to reading. College is a whole new ballgame in terms of expectations and workload, and one of the biggest differences is the way students are expected to read and study material, he/she says. How can students prepare for college-level reading? Huntington offers these tips: Think critically while reading. In college, professors expect students to have a variety of reading strategies in their skillset toolbox. Examples include reading for information, reading to form an opinion, reading to recall facts, and reading to summarize or understand the big picture. Its essential that high school students strengthen their critical thinking skills while reading so that they can analyze that which they read in different ways. Expand the vocabulary. The more high school students read, the better. Reading a wide variety of materialsfrom books to essays to newspapers to blogshelps students acquire new vocabulary, which will help them in college. Its also important for students to learn to embrace the dictionary and the thesaurus, which will help them get into the habit of looking up unfamiliar words and different word choices for common words. Interpret. Theres no place for passive reading in college. Students should strengthen their analytic reading by breaking down complex passages. They must practice figuring out an authors purpose and drawing their own conclusions. When reading, students need to think deeply about how they feel about texts and how an authors approach does or does not influence their feelings and opinions. Read with depth. In college, students are expected to read with depth so that they have a strong understanding of texts and can talk intelligently about them. Students should read to understand and reread if necessary to ensure they are able to share their opinions on the text, predict what might happen next, summarize the main points, and more. The Final Phonecall

The Final Phonecall Most of the best tutors I know make time to call a student after they have finished working together. I’ve done this consistently for the last decade and have found it not only good for business but… …hugely fulfilling on a personal level. Every student is different, however there are a number of things that most of these calls have in common. I usually thank them for working hard, ‘for making my job easier by putting in the effort’, and give them credit for how far they’ve come. If I’ve done my job well, there will have been changes in their studies. Even if this isn’t reflected in huge grade increases, it will be evident in their attitude to school and work in general. Most of my students start off hating Maths and/or Science, so this can be something else to mention: ‘I want to acknowledge you for putting the work in even though it’s a subject you hate so much!’ I will then ask them if there’s anything they want to ask or say to me. Usually there isn’t much to be said, but it does allow them to get anything that’s been worrying them off their chests. Things like, ‘I don’t know if I worked hard enough.’ Your job at this point is mostly to listen to them and understand why they may feel this way. Maybe they could have worked harder, but sometimes part of your job is to encourage them to ease up a little. Don’t invalidate their feelings by saying something like, ‘You’re wrong’. If you do disagree with them, instead say something along the lines of: ‘I understand why you might feel that way. Actually I think you could not have worked any harder.’ Very often I find myself saying how much I’ve enjoyed working with them. I try to give specific examples of what I’ve learnt from them, too. It’s rare that I meet a student who I don’t learn something from (even if it’s about Pokemon cards). Finally, I will end the call by thanking them for trusting in me and wishing them good luck in the future. There are three reasons why these phone calls can be a good idea: 1. Positive reinforcement for the student. One of the greatest lessons a person can learn in life is that working hard is far more important than grades. Grades should be a reward of working hard, but not the only focus of a student. By acknowledging how hard they’ve worked and how far they’ve come, you’re helping them to see that in the future (especially when they’re struggling with something) they can overcome it with perseverance. This is particularly effective if you can remind them of a specific topic or exam question they couldn’t do in the beginning and now can.  2. It provides both of you with closure on your time together. When any relationship comes to an end, including the working relationship between tutor and student closure can be important for both of you. There are a number of papers and articles (most available online) that discuss this topic in great detail. You might find it useful to look at papers that specifically deal with the  need for cognitive closure in education. 3. Positive memories. Very often the student’s last memory of you is in the context of a stressed and hurried final lesson just before an exam. By making this phone call you can leave the student (and their family) with a positive memory of you. This is also comes in handy when they recommend you to friends or if younger siblings eventually need a tutor. It can take time to get used to making this kind of call, but it’s often during these conversations that I’m reminded of why I love tutoring so much.
